Pixar’s animated film, Wall-E (2008), was a commercial success. It was loved by young and adults alike. The story was about a robot that is designated on Earth to clean garbage. The story begins in 2805 when the Earth is not inhabited by humans as they are living on Axiom, a large spaceship housing cities and life.
The movie tackled the issue of consumerism that led humans to make a wasteland out of Earth. The only option for the survival of the human race was to leave Earth and settle on a distant spaceship. However, Wall-E or Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class is the only robot on Earth trying to make an impact by cleaning up the mess that the humans left behind. It is staying in operation by salvaging parts of other robots that have become inactive. As time passed, Wall-E developed a personality as it could think and even had emotions. These pertained to that being loved and belonging. Directed by Andrew Stanton with the screenplay by Stanton and Jim Reardon, the story of Wall-E deliberates upon environmentalism. The Earth is shown as a desolate planet with no humans because of the heaps of garbage that cover all the land. This reflects humans taking responsibility for their actions. Moreover, the thoughts of consumerism are also shown. The humans, who are obese lay on comfortable remote sofa-type chairs, eat and drink and do all activities while remaining inactive. This shows humans’ tendency to remain comfortable and not pursue any physical activity. It is reflected in the digital media and technology that is making humans inactive physically.
There is a moment in the movie where a human male character touches a human female character and both see humans and the life around them from their perspective that is not influenced by technology. This moment talks about the importance of human connection and living a natural life. This film has discussed themes of social isolation and technology to great extent. It is much-watch for all.
